Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. It occurs when there is pain and inflammation of the plantar fascia. This band of tissues runs along the bottom of your feet and connects your heel bone to your toes. Plantar fasciitis can sometimes cause a heel spur to form as well. Our Port Salerno podiatrist has successfully treated thousands of patients who suffered with plantar fasciitis pain. This type of heel problem can be caused by different reasons including: sports participation that involves much running; being overweight; wearing shoes which do not provide good support; standing for long periods of time during the day; or having flat feet or high arches. When you have this heel pain, you generally feel it when you first get up in the morning, or when getting up after sitting for a long period of time. You also may feel this pain after you have been on your feet for a long time. Surgery is rarely used to treat heel pain even when a heel spur is present. One form of treatment is to provide the patient with cortisone injections. Our doctor is highly skilled in this procedure and will slowly inject the medicine so that any discomfort is limited. Good strapping with special tape can be effective and help the plantar fascia muscle relax. This taping will last for up to 10 days. Anti-inflammatory pain medications or oral cortisone pills can also be helpful. A new successful treatment is extracorporeal pulse activation technology. This technology uses pressure waves to help heal the damaged tissue. Prescription orthotics may also be helpful and our podiatrist can create the castings for these.
